Jen had us fill out a bingo card with words we thought would be part of the discussion questions. (Patty won the Bingo!)
Start with Chelsea Handler herself. Why does she pursue her quest for one-night-stands? What is she looking for? What does sex mean to her-or what do the encounters mean to her? In fact, do they have meaning?
Some readers have complained about Chelsea’s lack of compassion or shallow hedonism. Others have found her refreshingly frank. What do you think?
Do you have any favorite encounters in the book? Which do you find most humorous? Which episodes are the least appealing or most disturbing? What do you think of the various men she attempts to have sex with – any favorites..least favorite?
Talk about Chelsea’s myriad friends and family members, and their reaction to or even participation in Chelsea’s exploits.
Does My Horizontal Life play into stereotypes in terms of African-American and gay men or midgets?
Other Discussion:
For November we were set to read Sandra’s book “Smilla’s Sense of Snow” by Peter Hoeg & Tiina Nunnally. Since Sandra has moved to Arizona and nobody volunteered to take over a motion was made to skip her book. The group voted and approved the motion. We will move the rest of the books up one month.
Next meeting: Thursday, November 29 – Read: The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon – Hostess: Summer

Book club discussion: (from SurveyMonkey)
Do you have any suggestions for improving SWCR book club? 1) Perhaps starting the whole book review process earlier say 7:00 p.m. 2) I think we need to consider a small yearly fee. Mostly to go to you Pam as the admin. Even if everyone gave $3 or $5 or whatever a year, that would help. To me it would not be a wage so much as an expense reimbursement as I worry sometimes that you may be paying out of pocket for stuff. Or maybe it is petty cash to cover expenses. Just something to think at.
Do you think we have an issue with excessive talking/side conversations during club? 5 said yes. 3 said no.
What would be a good way to handle excessive talking and side conversations during a meeting? 1) Pass a speaker button or token to those wishing to speak. Also remind them of their (missing) manners. 2) I don’t think that there is excessive talking, I think it’s more of a “not enough time” thing. Most of us only see each other during book club, so starting book club earlier could get the book review done earlier and allow for time to chat. 3) Have a short time before to talk before we get started on intro’s and/or ice breakers. Try to sit by different people each meeting. If you need to talk to your neighbor, just do it quietly. 4) Mix up who people sit by. Have a conversation at book club about what are our goals for book club meetings and how to keep the excessive talking down. Maybe print the “rules’ In the minutes or have the host remind us at the beginning of each meeting. Set up a time frame for the meeting example 7-7:15 social; 7:15 mixer/game, 7:45 book discussion 8:30 social/go home..just an example, I am not sure how long we actually meet 5) I don’t think it is a big issue, just one of those things that happens when a bunch of people are together. The one time I had an issue, I told the person right then & there & that stopped it. I do think though it would be better if we sat in a circle vs. rectangle. In a circle people are facing each other & can listen/see everyone better than a rectangle where u are only interacting with your end of the table. A circle would reduce extra chatter & help people to observe the one talking. 6) Meet earlier? Set up tables differently? 7) Have a tip jar. If you are talking out of turn during club you will have to put a quarter in the tip jar. The money will be used for future club donations.

Discussion questions:
1) Did you like Committed as much as Eat, Pray, Love? Why or why not?
2) Gilbert intertwines her personal story of waiting to marry Felipe with information she researched on the history of marriage. Do you think the two threads (narrative and history) worked well together?
3) Was any of Gilbert's analysis on the history and evolution of marriage particularly insightful to you? Which ones?
4) Could you sympathize with Gilbert's desire not to marry Felipe?
5) What do you think has shaped your own thoughts and expectations about marriage? If you are married, did you take time to reflect on the institution of marriage before entering it? If you are not married, did Gilbert's book affect your thoughts on whether marriage is worthwhile?
6) Gilbert meets and interviews several native people in her travels around Southeast Asia. Did any of their situations surprise you? Did you have any favorites among the people she met?
Next Month read The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory (Part of The Cousins’ War series) – According to the website http://literatehousewife.com/2007/08/philippa-gregory-in-chronological-order/ the suggestion is to read “The Lady of the Rivers”, then “The White Queen” and then “The Red Queen” but another website says to read “The White Queen”, “The Red Queen” and then “The Lady of the Rivers” http://www.fictiondb.com/author/philippa-gregory~series-list~3059.htm
But then I looked at the Publisher Simon & Schuster and they have it in a 3 book boxed set with “The Lady of the Rivers”, “The White Queen” and “The Red Queen”. http://books.simonandschuster.com/Philippa-Gregory's-The-Cousins'-War-3-Book-Boxed/Philippa-Gregory/9781451682953
You can be the judge!

Discussion questions:
#3 - Do you find irony in the fact that Alice, a Harvard professor and
researcher, suffers from a disease that causes her brain to atrophy?
Why do you think the author, Lisa Genova, chose this profession? How
does her past academic success affect Alice's ability, and that of her
family, to cope with Alzheimers?
#4 - He refused to watch her take her medications. He could be
midsentence, midconversation, but if she got out her plastic
days-of-the-week pill dispenser, he left the room (p 90). Is John's
reaction understandable? What might be the significance of his
frequently fiddling with his wedding ring when Alice's health is
discussed?
#7 - Alice decides she wants to spend her remaining time with her
family and her books. Considering her devotion and passion for her
work, why doesn't her research make the list of priorities? Does Alice
most identify herself as a mother, wife or scholar?
#8 - Were you surprised at Alice's plan to overdose on sleeping pills
once her disease progressed to an advanced stage? Is this decision in
character? Why does she make this difficult choice? If they found out,
would her family approve?
#10 - Do Alice's relationships with her children differ? Why does she
read Lydia's diary? And does Lydia decide to attend college only to
honor her mother?
For March 29 meeting read "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin.
Jen is the hostess.
